IK-144 Tandem Animas Inflatable Kayak
Two paddlers, more gear, and the outfitter-built feel of the Animas. The RMR IK-144 Tandem Animas is a 12-foot I-beam inflatable kayak built for two-person whitewater, commercial river use, and paddlers who want more room and buoyancy without giving up the stable tracking characteristics of the original Animas.
The Outfitter Tandem
RMR describes the IK-144 as its most popular tandem Animas with outfitters. That makes sense when you look at what the boat is built to do.
At 12 feet long with 11-inch tubes and five air chambers, it provides room for two paddlers while retaining the I-beam floor, center-baffle design, and reinforced bottom protection of the Animas family.
It is equally useful when a solo paddler wants more room for camping gear, fishing equipment, or a longer river trip.
I-Beam Stability for Two
Two-person inflatable kayaking adds another variable: both paddlers need the boat to hold a predictable line.
The IK-144 uses a glued-in 44 oz / 2000-denier I-beam floor and center baffle. RMR specifically positions the I-beam Animas design around stability and tracking, helping the tandem carry momentum through waves and stay controlled in moving water.
Reinforced for River Use
The IK-144 uses 33 oz / 1000-denier PVC main tubes with a heavier 44 oz / 2000-denier floor.
A reinforced bottom chafer adds protection in rocky shallows and narrow channels where the bottom of an inflatable kayak sees repeated contact. Leafield D-7 valves, stainless steel D-rings, and rubberized handles round out a design developed around repeated river use.
Tandem When You Want It. Extra Space When You Don't.
The IK-144 is primarily a tandem, but the extra hull length also makes it useful for a larger solo paddler or someone carrying additional equipment.
RMR specifically recommends tandem IKs for two paddlers, larger paddlers wanting more space and buoyancy, anglers, and overnight use. The IK-144 can also be paddled solo when that extra room is more valuable than the compact size of a single.
IK-144 Animas vs. IK-152 Taylor
Both are tandem RMR inflatable kayaks, but the floor construction creates two distinctly different boats.
Choose the IK-144 Animas when stability, tracking, reinforced construction, and outfitter-style durability are the priorities.
Choose the IK-152 Taylor when you want a lighter tandem, easier rolling and transport, a firmer drop-stitch floor, and the Taylor's more minimal design.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the IK-144 Tandem Animas best for?
It is best suited to tandem river paddlers, commercial outfitters, larger paddlers wanting more space, and solo paddlers who need additional room for fishing or overnight gear.
Can I paddle the IK-144 solo?
Yes. RMR specifically notes that its tandem IKs can be used by a solo paddler when additional space and buoyancy are useful. It is a good option for carrying more gear than a single IK can comfortably handle.
What is the difference between the IK-144 Animas and IK-152 Taylor?
The IK-144 Animas uses an I-beam floor and reinforced construction with an emphasis on stability, tracking, and commercial-style river use. The IK-152 Taylor uses a drop-stitch floor and is lighter and easier to roll for transport.
Why choose an I-beam tandem kayak?
RMR says its I-beam Animas models provide the strongest emphasis on stability and tracking. Those characteristics are particularly useful in a tandem, where two paddlers are working together to control the boat.
Is the IK-144 designed for whitewater?
Yes. RMR describes the Tandem Animas as a whitewater-ready inflatable kayak designed to hold a straighter line and carry momentum through waves.
Is the IK-144 useful for overnight trips?
Yes. RMR specifically notes that tandem IKs are useful to paddlers who want additional room for overnight gear, and the IK-144 can be paddled solo when cargo space is the priority.
What does the reinforced bottom chafer do?
It adds additional protection to the bottom of the kayak in rocky shallows, tight channels, and other places where the hull can contact the riverbed.
Should the Tandem Animas be stored inflated?
RMR recommends transporting and storing its I-beam Animas models inflated when practical. Buyers who frequently need to tightly roll and pack their IK may prefer the lighter Taylor series.
Are thigh straps included?
No. Inflatable kayak thigh straps are sold separately and attach to the kayak's D-rings.
What warranty does the IK-144 have?
RMR lists a 6-year retail and 3-year commercial warranty on workmanship and materials, subject to the manufacturer's complete warranty terms.
